Choosing to seek an autism diagnosis is an individual decision. It can be extremely helpful to better understand yourself and it can also open doors to help and support. However, receiving a diagnosis as an adult can be an emotional experience. Positive emotions such as relief, validation and a sense of belonging are sometimes intermingled with anger or loss. Give yourself the time and space needed to process the different emotions you are experiencing. It is also helpful to share experiences, so when you feel ready, seek out other autistic people to talk to either in person or online.
